Symptoms

Hyperion Enterprise Retrieve displays #VALUE with HPVAL formula.

The POV settings in Retrieve appear correct

Cause

The actual value in the period option is not the displayed value due to Excel formatting.
Although it appears to be MAR 03 in the formula bar it is really 3/3/04 as an example.

Solution

From within Excel, in the cell which references the period, either enter the period number (i.e.1 for Jan Etc) or use the CHANGE PERIOD option from the RHXL menu to populate the period cell with a correctly formatted period value.

Once done refresh the sheet and ensure the values are now displaying as expected.
