Cause

Solution

NOTE:
This notes does not apply to versions after 6.4.X where the application server setup is controlled by EAM, Enterprise Server Manager and not HADMIN.EXE.

When you set up an application to use server-based processing, Hyperion Enterprise runs specific tasks on an application server instead of the client machine. When setting up your application, you can set up a default server to act as the application server. When a task is submitted for server-based processing to the specified server, the status of the task is tracked during processing. The task status is displayed on the client machine in the Server Task Status dialog box. If you submit multiple tasks to the server, and disable the task status dialog, the display is disabled. When you set up your application, you can also specify if you want the task status to be displayed on the client machine. The default for this option is to display the task status.
The Application Server must be installed first during the initial product installation.

When the application is enabled for the Application Server, the task status display is selected by default. You can override the progress indicator so it is not the default setting. To do this, from the main Hyperion Enterprise desktop, select File > Preferences > User and select Do Not Display Task Status in the Application Server Task Status section of the User Preferences window.

To create a server-based application:

1. Start Hyperion Enterprise on the application server and click New Application.

2. Follow the normal procedure to create an application. However, you must use @APP in the path for all application subdirectories, such      as data and reports.

3. Once the application is created, from the Application window, select the Application Server tab.

Note: The first time that you open the Application window after you install the Hyperion Enterprise Application Server, the system prompts you for the location of the database of servers so that it can produce a list of servers. The system administrator should know the location of the database.

4. Click Use Application Server.

5. Select the application server ID from the Application Server ID list.

6. Click Browse to specify the HSvrCtrl.dat location.

7. Select the Display Server Task Status check box if you want the progress indicator to display during server based tasks.

Note: When the application is enabled for the Application Server, the task status display is selected by default. You can override the progress indicator so it is not the default setting. To do this, from the main Hyperion Enterprise desktop, select File > Preferences > User and select Do Not Display Task Status in the Application Server Task Status section of the User Preferences window.

8. Select File > Save, then select File > Close.

9. Start Hyperion Enterprise.

To enable an existing application for server processing:

1. Start Hyperion Enterprise and open the application.

2. From the Application window, select the Application Server tab.

Note: The first time that you open the Application window, the system prompts you for the location of the database of servers so that it can produce a list of servers. If you do not know the location of the database, contact your system administrator.

3. Click Use Application Server.

4. Select the application server ID from the Application Server ID list.

5. Select Browse to specify the HSvrCtrl.dat location.

6. Select File > Save, then select File > Close.

Starting or Stopping Application Servers

You must start the Hyperion Enterprise Application Server program (HSVRCTRL.EXE) before you can execute any Hyperion Enterprise tasks on the server. The Hyperion Enterprise Application Server program is designed to be run as a Windows service, however, you can also run it as a regular program.
If you selected Auto Start in the Hyperion Enterprise Application Server Setup program, Windows starts the Hyperion Enterprise Application Server program as a service whenever you start the server. You can use the Hyperion Enterprise Application Server Administration program or the Windows Control Panel to stop the server.

  • To start or stop the application server, do one of the following:
  • To start or stop the Hyperion Enterprise Application Server as a service using the Administration program:
    • select the Application module in Hyperion Enterprise and select Navigate > Application Server Administration on the server that you want to start or stop. Select the server in the tree view of the Hyperion Application Server Administration window, and select Start Server or Stop Server.
  • To start or stop the server as a service from the Windows  Control Panel:
    • double-click the Administrative Tools icon and then double-click the Services icon. Select Hyperion Enterprise Application Server from the list, then select Start or Stop.

Updating a Server Database

You can use the Hyperion Enterprise Application Server Administration program to update the server database after you change the server settings. This process changes the information in the database only. You must use the Hyperion Enterprise Application Server Administration program to change the server settings.

  • To update the server database:
1. From the Hyperion Enterprise Application module, select Navigate > Application Server Administration.
2. Select the server you want to update.
3. Select File > Server Settings.
4. Update the server description, computer name, or port number, then click OK.

Note: The Hyperion Enterprise Application Server Administration program queries the computer for its server settings and updates the database appropriately. If the server machine is temporarily inaccessible, you can manually update the setting for the port number and server ID.
