FDM Validation Fails With Error: Automation Error

FDM Validation Fails With Error: Automation Error

  Modified 19-APR-2010     Type PROBLEM

Applies to:

Hyperion Financial Data Quality Management - Version: 8.0.5.0.00 to 9.3.1.0.00 - Release: 8.0 to 9.3

Microsoft Windows (32-bit)

Symptoms

When running the Validation Step of the FDM Workflow, end user receives "Automation Error", however they still receive a Gold Fish for success.

Cause

The Validate Step when integrating with HFM attempts to create an intersection check report that is an html file published to Microsoft Excel.  An automation error indicates that it is unable to publish the report to Microsoft Excel.

Solution

1) Install Microsoft Excel on each FDM application server in the environment.

Excel is called via DCOM on the FDM application server in order to generate the validation report.  To resolve the issue, Excel must exist on each FDM application server in the environment

Note to add: Conversation between Roland and Infratects as the Oracle solution was not resolving the issue.

Thanks Giacomo, http://concentricsolutions.helpserve.com/Knowledgebase/Article/View/184/0/w hen-running-validate-step-in-fdm-receive-automation-error

The error message that I was getting is accurately describes in this item from out knowledge-base.

However the fix that the article recommends did not seem to fix it, though we did use the user-name ‘hyperion.admin’.
Also Excel has only just been installed on their server which may have caused some of the problems.

The identity on the DCOM component was set to hyperion.admin rather than hyperion.service, but that could have been an artifact of re-registering the adapter.
The other thing I’ve done is simply launching Excel as both hyperion.admin and hyperion.service, and in both cases I was prompted by ”first run” screens (initials and preference for update delivery)
― this might happen if Excel was updated / reinstalled, if the user profile was somehow lost by Windows, or if Excel was installed after EPM config (and hence never really tested).
In order for FDM to work, Excel must not prompt the user for anything on launch.

That¹s fantastic Giacomo. What did you do? It does seem to be working correctly now but it certainly was not doing so on Friday. It would be really useful to be able to document in case this happens again though.
